"Harvesting Good Books"

Mapleton Elementary School recently completed a school wide unit on "Harvesting Good Books." Each classroom focused on a specific fall harvest topic and worked on related activities in reading, writing, math, science and art. As a culminating activity for the unit, the school gathered for a special read-aloud presentation by Janet Allen.
To encourage parent involvement in the activities, students and their families were invited to create a scarecrow at home. During the final week of "Harvesting Good Books," the school was decorated inside and out with a charming collection of scarecrows -- each one unique. The scarecrows were labeled with a family name and reflected something about the family that created it, with accessories like a bag of potatoes, a UPS uniform, and logos on hats and sweatshirts. Many modeled good habits, such as reading a book! Students continued their learning as they charted scarecrow similarities and differences, and completed math and writing activities with their findings. The snapshots below are a sampling of some of the creative fellows who were special school visitors for a few days.
