Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book.

Bod Owens (short for “Nobody”) found protection from the people who murdered his family in the unlikeliest of places, and at the same time proved that it really did take a village to raise a child.  The question remains--what kind of village?

Bod lives in a graveyard, sheltered by the dead.  Other than that (and a preference for shrouds over tee shirts and blue jeans), he is a perfectly normal boy.  Granted, living with the dead teaches him a few uncommon skills; fading, gliding, turning to mist, and causing fear.  The denizens of the graveyard taught him all their defenses, because when the murderers came back to finish the job, he would need them.
