When your brother is autistic, you have to walk a fine line between having a life of your own, and facing the realities of meltdowns, obsessions and public embarrassment. Some times, concessions must be made. Catherine keeps a list of rules for her brother, to help him navigate what, to him, is a bewilderingly foreign world. The summer when she meets Jason and Kristi, though, tests her beliefs about friendship, her family, what “normal” really looks like, and what the rules are really for.
