Story of a girl, by Sara Zarr.
Deanna’s family lives in a broken-down house, and works in a series of dead-end jobs. Her brother and his girlfriend live in the basement with their new baby. The flowerpot that broke last summer is still in the yard where it fell, the Christmas lights never got taken down.
Deanna’s dad caught her with Tommy Webber back when she was thirteen and her dad hasn’t really spoken to her since. Tommy spoke, though—enough to gain her an unwelcome and unsavory reputation throughout her school.
Over one summer, Deanna learns she can overcome that reputation, and begins a new path toward both redemption, and forgiveness.
