Health/Physical Education

HEALTH (1 CREDIT) Grade 9
This course is designed to empower students to achieve their optimal potential of wellness and to take responsibility for their total health and wellness—physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. The focus is on knowledge and skills that promote health and help students to make responsible decisions, practice safe and healthful behaviors, and avoid and reduce health risks. Students will learn to take responsibility for their wellness which contributes to a lifestyle that is active, balanced, and healthful.

HEALTH FORUM I (1⁄2 CREDIT)
This discussion/activity based course will explore current social and health issues such as infectious diseases, advancements in medicines, and health career explorations. Professionals in the areas of health and wellness will be invited to share their expertise and experiences. Health issues that are relevant will be investigated, researched and
debated.

HEALTH FORUM II (1⁄2 CREDIT)
This course will address the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors students need to participate in positive, caring and respectful relationships. Topics include: the psychology of relationships, personality, values, role models, family dynamics, friendships, cyber relationships and dating. Differentiating between healthy and unhealthy relationships
will also be addressed.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
One credit of Physical Education is required for graduation. Skills in lifetime and team sports are taught as well as a fitness program which emphasizes cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and muscular strength. Some of the activities that may be taught in Physical Education classes include but are not limited to:

  • AAHPER Fitness Testing Conducted Fall and Spring

  • Archery

  • Badminton

  • Basketball

  • Fistball

  • Fitness Training with Weights & Aerobic Equipment

  • Golf

  • Indoor Recreational Games

  • Soccer (indoor/outdoor)

  • Softball/Whiffle Ball

  • Tchouk Ball

  • Tennis

  • The President’s Challenge Physical Activity & Fitness Awards Program

  • Ultimate Frisbee

  • Volleyball

ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION (1 CREDIT) Grade 10
This course is primarily designed to meet the needs of students who are physically unable to function in a regular physical education class. Enrollment in this class is through the recommendation of the Physical Education Department chairperson and guidance counselor. Appropriate physical fitness attire is required.

ELECTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION (1⁄2 or 1 CREDIT) Grade 11 & 12
This elective semester course is for 11th and 12th grade students. Team sports and individual activities are offered. Appropriate physical fitness attire is required.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (1 CREDIT) Grade 10
This required course for 10th grade students meets daily. Team sports and individual lifetime fitness activities are offered. Appropriate physical fitness attire is required.
